I think perhaps the difference in our respective ways of thinking is that I do not consider not being able to afford something to be a value judgment in and of itself. I watched my parents go from affording very little to affording almost anything they wanted, without ever showing a change in lifestyle or values. To me, being able to afford something, in and of itself, is not a value judgment. Of course, I also do not think that someone collecting food stamps or welfare reflects anything about their character.
