<I agree that the dress, party, flowers, friends, relatives, music, rings, etc are very nice to have. I just don't understand why it's confusing that someone wouldn't mind not having those things, focusing on the marriage, not the wedding.>
Maybe you should check out post #896 as I was DONE with the discussion with scottswife2001 an told her okay about the arrangement and you were the one who continued the discussion :)
The church part is NEVER free, but much less expensive than the reception :)
"So if you were too young to get engaged, why do it?"
Do what, get engaged? Because we knew we were going to have a long engagement as we wanted to have the church, reception, honeymoon and home that we wanted.
ITA with you. That is why there are so many divorces out there. We knew each other almost 2 1/2 years before we got engaged and had a 2 year engagement. We didn't get married to just "have a party" but it was in our plans and we wanted all our friends and family to rejoice in our decision to get married. Since we have been married for 15 yrs, I think we made a great decision to wait and not rush into marriage "just" to have a party.

I don't remember religion being a part of girl scouts and I was in girl scouts from 1985-1997.
