There may be some truth to that. I spanked my son once. It had no effect on his behavior at the time (he giggled), but for days afterwards, if he did not get his way, he 'spanked' whoever was stopping him.
I do,too, but I do not think this conversation is about marriage as much as it is about the wedding. Some people see the wedding as a mere formality, others see it as something very ceremonial. Who is to say that either way of viewing it is wrong? I've known people who got so caught up in the details of the wedding, that they did absolutely no planning for the marriage (discussion of kids, house, careers, division of labor). Not my style, but it worked for them. Point being, I hope your above statement does not indicate that you think those people who see the wedding as being about a piece of paper actually see marriage (the relationship) as a piece of paper.
