Because there's no rule, moral or legal, requiring that anyone be personally responsible for cleaning their own homes. And to the extent that CPS is interested (which is at a level that even *I* would shudder to live in), they don't care WHO cleans as long as it gets done. You can have Santa Claus and Easter Bunny do it for all they care.
There's nothing morally wrong about paying someone to clean your house, whether you work outside the home or not.
Heck, right up through the Great Depression it was EXPECTED for middle-class housewives to have hired help.
Bwahhhh!!! According to whom???? You? Well, I don't remember anyone ever giving you any authority over those kinds of decisions. I'm certainly WELL aware that the MILITARY doesn't think changing oil is a man's job.
God, I don't think I've ever heard anything so self-serving in my whole life.
Actually, there were a number of years when, without the roomie, things would have been very ugly financially. But I didn't worry about him moving out because his situation was more dire than mine and he simply would NOT have found a better place for less money than he was paying at my house. It was an extremely good situation for both of us. The last 7 or 8 years he lived here, yeah, it was just kind of gravy for both of us, and gave us both some breathing room for building up savings, but had he moved out during that time, I could have made it without him.
Yes, of course, lol. She also thinks that if the landlord could pay the property tax and mortgage without the rental income, then the rental income does not pay any of those expenses. The whole legal vs illegal has, of course, exactly nothing to do with any of that, except in a formal accounting sense (i.e. how you report it all, or don't).
The funny thing is that she is right about one thing. Illegal rentals are very common in lower middle class hoods of NY, many of which have a large Italian contingent. So that may be why it is the norm from her POV.
Except that even illegal income is subject to federal tax laws--that's how the feds were finally able to convict Al Capone back in the day--they got him on tax evasion for not claiming his illegal income from his illicit alcohol business.
Oh I know. Renting illegally is really stupid for another reason, if the renter does not pay you have no legal recourse to either get him out or sue for the back rent.
