Because I doubt very highly that illegal apts are only in my area. You are just not aware of them as I am.

So was it your son that lived with you? Was that the person renting out a room in your condo?

failing to claim the income (which you've said is a given with an illegal apartment situation) is a crime.

this whole conversation reminds me of the "moms who don' t use child support for their kids" discussion.

Yes. We. Did.

I just paid someone to paint my kitchen too.

Oh, man, I am SOOOOO jealous!!! I was planning to get started painting my living room this past weekend, but ended up dropping one of the (unopened) cans of paint on my foot, and spent saturday on the couch, with my foot up and iced. sigh. The only way it's getting done NOW is if I prep all week and paint all next weekend. (I need to get it all done by the 28th, because that's when the flooring is being replaced and I'd rather paint while the old nasty carpeting is still down, y'know?)

Pity me. ;)

"The funny thing is that she is right about one thing. Illegal rentals are very common in lower middle class hoods of NY, many of which have a large Italian contingent. So that may be why it is the norm from her POV."

I thought you lived in a nicer area of NY, like me? You are not aware of middle-to high class people who rent out part of their homes illegally?

Exactly and that is why I would never rely on that money to pay my mortgage or taxes.

I have never rented out my home but have known neighbors, friends and family who have done so. It is not uncommon and I am surprised you have never heard of it-shrug

No. It was not my son. My son WAS here, but I don't think even the IRS would let me claim him as both a dependent and rental income.

WTF? My roommate is a matter of MANY MANY MANY posts on my part. He lived with me longer than I've posted at iVillage--even back before the parentsplace days. I've mentioned him numerous times. He's the guy that adopted my foster cat. he's the guy that left 4 empty jars, formerly filled with salsa, in the fridge.

it's not like I suddenly invented having a roommate.

Seriously, what IS your deal?

So you claim every single dime you bring in?
