That's not really earth shattering news, given your recent posts.

The 5 days includes Sat and Sun before school starts. Usually they are posted in the office window on Friday and school starts the next Monday.

Or to put it another way: What are we assuming that the military couple could afford before marriage that they were not able to afford after marriage?

DH and I were living together on $900 a month when we got married. Except for the cost of the certificate, getting married changed exactly NOTHING about our bills or income. You say we couldn't afford to get married. What exactly couldn't we afford after marriage that we *could* afford before marriage?

Besides, that doesn't mean that the child will have that same teacher the entire school year. Dylan had 3 teachers and many short term subs his 1st grade year. Not a good year for him. Although, the teacher he had for the end of the year was one of his favorites.

Why do I feel as if I am spitting into the wind.

Because you can't change willful ignorance. You can change ignorance. But not if it's willfully maintained, protected and nurtured, as appears to be the case here.

Not according to the many brides I meet in my job. But I do agree with you, a wedding gown, bridesmaids, showers, rehearsal dinner, honeymoon, etc. isn't necessary in order to get married. But if the majority of brides thought that way, I'd be out of a job. :)

My parents insisted on throwing us a "proper" wedding and reception about 6 months later, and it was amazing. Truly the best time I've ever had. That's the day that we actually think of when we think of our wedding day. I have a hard time remembering the exact date of the legal ceremony. The only thing we spent was 50 cents to take the bus to the courthouse. DH had to pay, but I rode free with my student ID. It was an interesting time - we were dirt poor but really happy. Still really happy. :-)

Well, like most people in the US, they'd likely just continue to show up for work each day, thus earning a paycheck, from which they would pay their expenses.

Isn't that how you're doing it?

I would never volunteer in the schools because I'd miss all my favorite soaps and when would I get to eat my bon bons and work on getting a mom a$$?
