I think we actually agree on this whole issue and we're just talking about different things when we say "afford marriage". If the couple won't be adversely affected financially by getting married, then they can afford it. If they only have $20 to their name but would have to move out of their parents' house and start paying rent when they get married, then they can't afford it. I was only saying that the legal act of getting married, in and of itself, doesn't automatically lead to increased expenses for all people.
