That's a contradiction.

I'm pretty sure that our girls knew more about history than did some of their high school history teachers. When Erica was in 6th grade, she became the teacher's aide to the art teacher because there was nothing that she could teach Erica. In high school, Erica's art teacher had her do the basic project of each 3-project assignment and then Erica could go outside the assignment to do the other 2 projects on her own. Dylan never practices anything new; he waits until he has it all worked out in his head and then does it.

Did you visit any of the schools. IME test scores are more a result of the student body's overall SES and not necessarily an indication of the quality of the individual school.

Things I would would look for:

1) A quality media center/library that is well stocked and well used.
2) Not too much noise and not deadly quiet either. A happy buzz.
3) Artwork on the walls that isn't snowmen in June. Artwork where you can tell what the lesson was, but each child's work is distinctly different and innovative.
4) Different kinds of artwork- not just water colors or crayons. Some 3-D.
5) A strong music curriculum.
6) Teachers who are smiling in May.
7) Kids who are smiling when they are in the school.
8) Classroom that are set up in different ways. I would walk away from a school that had all the classroom set up in rows facing the front of the class - no matter how high the test scores were.
9) The PTA, how active is it? What do they do besides fund raising? Do they have a good relationship with the teachers and the Administration?
10) Are parents allowed in the classrooms to observe/volunteer?

I really don't think test scores are a total indicator of a the performance of a school district.

What about the specific location in the school district?

The other point I'd make here in agreement with you ;-) Is that I've learned that BECAUSE I

Yes. We. Did.
