I understand why it would be hard to keep friends, but that doesn't explain why you wouldn't want to make friends in the first place.

You trying to pick a fight by being dense?

You said, sarcastically, "I guess it's only my kids who fight."

Her statement that,"All children fight" is not an OPINION, it's a FACTUAL statement. And it is factually incorrect.

She doesn't get to have an opinion about facts.

Your answer was non sequential.

You said it's frivolous to pay for something that's your job, but that shopping is not frivolous because you'd rather spend your time and money shopping than paying for household help.

Because they affect world events. The protestant reformation, just to use one old example, was hugely influential on how Europe developed.

As another example, look at the typical Slavik nations and languages. The vast majority of slavik languages are written in Cyrillic alphabet. this is because Russia, Poland and some others stayed with the Greek Orthodox Church, when the original church split between the Greeks and the Romans. However, the Czechs and Slovaks (the old Czechoslovakia) was for centuries part of the Austro-Hungarian empire (and the Roman Catholic Church), those languages stayed with the Roman alphabet.

Those are just two examples in one tiny geographical corner of the world. Virtually all human history is directed in large part by the religions observed within them, and how those religions interacted cooperatively or in conflict with others.

To be honest, how anyone can live in the US in the aftermath of 9-11 and wonder why even a basic understanding of the major religions of the world is worthwhile knowledge is flabbergasting.

Because western literature, art, and history are deeply entwined with religion and its history, and makes little sense without some knowledge of basic religious beliefs. Because most people, over the course of their lives, even if they are not religious, are called upon to attend weddings, funerals, baptisms, bar mitzvahs, etc, that have a religious overtone, and it helps to know the customs and beliefs of the various faith tradition to avoid offending anyone. Because people fly airplanes into buildings because of religious reasons, and if we are to make peace at any point, understanding and being respectful of religious traditions is gonna be a must. Because we live in a global village these days, and knowing something of the history and culture, which includes religious beliefs, of the people you are doing business with is an advantage. Because even if you are religious, if you don't have some sense of the core religious teachings and values and texts, you can be led astray by nut cases posing as religious authorities.
