Well, bare minimum, it ought to include an understanding about WHY you should know. Bare minimum a 'basic understanding' would make such conflicts (and cooperations) understandable. A basic understanding would include knowing why Muslims, Jews and Christians are in conflict, as well as what they have in common. A basic understanding would include knowing some of the basic subdivisions within the major religions and where/why they differ.

But you can't even get there if you don't even know why you should know these things.

What kind of 'basic knowledge' are we talking about?

I have never sat down and thought about the "minimum" one would need to know. I just don't think that way, sorry. If I were a fairy godmother at Sleeping Beauty's christening and could have given her just one gift, it would be "eternal curiousity and wonder." And that's what I have tried to nurture in myself and in my children.

Nah, it's just an observation from having 4 kids. It was a very useful one in raising Erica. I could remind Erica that people were watching her if it looked like that she was on the verge of acting up. "Remember, people are looking at you." Worked every time. Not at all with Dylan. With him, I "threaten" bodily mayhem which he thinks is funny. Humor works with him. I don't remember Joy or Angela ever acting up.
