Lack of space mainly and lack of alternatives in the the school's district. Not all schools have a waiting list.

I agree.

Cru, really, it is in your best interest to stop trying to pretend you undestand the situation of kids in elite private schools such as the one Ah-hah's kids attend. These are highly-motivated kids who are taking numerous AP courses, participating in sports and clubs, student council, honors music ensembles, etc, hoping to be competitve for the nation's top colleges. They do not go home, do 45 minutes of homework and sit in front of the TV at night so they will be "up on the latest shows." The more you insinuate otherwise, the more uninformed you sound.

"The involvement in the day-to-day life is totally different from the vacation/gift-giving when one sees them only occasionaly."

That type of grandparent is a totally different species though. I am speaking of grandparents who don't live close but are in contact with their grandchildren on a regular basis and know what is going on in their lives and are pretty active.

It would seem, trying, that there is room for private companies/people to fill the gap in your situation. We have numerous after-school programs in our area who send vans to the schools to pick up the kids on early-release days and for before and after school care.

Yes, I agree physical things can be done much easier if the grandparent is closer (AND has that closer relationship as some grandparents can live close by and still not do things as often with their grandchildren). That does not mean that they can't have a close relationship, one that the grandparents could be in their lives every.single.day.

I live in the city proper, and we still have tons of deer problems. The city council actually approved an urban deer hunt (professionals come in with bows and arrows is my understanding). The deer is going to be processed and donated to local soup kitchens, which I think is fabulous.

They've even had them in Howard County!!!
