Yes I have. My one set of grandparents lived closer than the other and I didn't feel a difference at all. Neither were in my lifes every.single.day but they were a PART of my life and I saw both of them and felt bonded to both sets, no matter the distance or not.

I did clarify it. Maybe you missed that post today and the many other ones that went before it.

Lol. I remember that my niece wrote about her experience of moving from the "top" suburban school in our metro area to a very diverse, inner-city school. It must have been a good essay because she got into her first choice school. This was some years ago, and I doubt an essay like that would do it these days. It makes me sad that some kids are doing volunteer work, or trying to create some special experience, solely for college application purposes. I think we're putting a lot of pressure on kids these days to get into theses "top" schools, when maybe these kids would be happier somewhere else.

So you think that only these "elite" schools have students who stay after? lol!! My dd stayed after on Monday to study in the library and yesterday for a club meeting. So does that make her "better" like these "elite" students you are boasting about?

Again, I will say it. There are NO busses for these kids. If they HAVE to wait for a ride, why not join a club or a sports team. And again, it does NOT mean ALL kids who join a club or sports team do so because they HAVE to wait for ride but because they want to.

I don't think you are other posters are seeing the BIG picture. ALL of these kids need to get a ride home. If they HAVE to stay, that just might be the reason 75% of them join clubs and sports even if they ENJOY the club or sport. It gives them something to do besides hanging out before their rides arrive.

The school my kid goes to puts a lot of emphasis -- too much, I think, into getting into top schools.

But those are two different sets of GPs. You can't really compare 1 set of close to a different set of far and state that distance doesn't matter ... what if the close set are just uncaring to begin with? What if the set that is close are just jerks?

I've lived 1500 miles away from my parents and I've lived 90 miles away from my parents. They had the same love, desire, etc when they were far as when they were close. But they were able to much more involved in my kids' lives when they were only 90 miles away. Were they *better* grandparents when they were close? No. But there were better able to manifest that love and relationship and those desires when they were closer.
