Thought this article might be a starting point for a discussion. From today's NYT:

i won't generalize but most moms I KNOW with kids my kids ages are younger htan me. i was 28, DH was almost 30 when we married, i got pg with our first child at 32. based on school friends i've reconnected with on FB, i certainly am in the minority with kids ages, most of them have older high school, college age kids. and these mom friends did go to college, some even have graduate degrees, they just married in their 20s and had kids before 30.

You are probably right. In my mother's generation, women tended to marry young, in their early to mid-20s. Often because they were pregnant, but also because they really were not expected to have careers or even college degrees.

In my generation, marriage was considered "square," and most of the people I went to HS with either never married or married late, often after having some kids. In my brother's cohort marriage is once again the norm, and they tend to marry fairly young, late 20s to early 30s.

I sort of had the impression that Americans married young on average, but it is only an impression.

I still think it is regional, familial or somehow segmented.

Yes, although I think the author is a bit older than you.

I think this is it, although I have not had time to look at it yet:

"I got married when I was 25, and I felt as if that was extremely late in the game. Of course, that was in the Mesozoic era, and we had no end of trouble keeping the stegosaurus away from the wedding cake."

Can anybody find a link to the actual report?
