Why not call those who are at home "work at home moms". We all know moms work like nobody's business. Or we can call them volunteer work at home moms, since they are engaged in unpaid labor. :)

I always prefeered "homemaker." Housewife sounds like you're married to your house.

i think our culture should have a new, updated name for "housewife", not only is housewife not what my mom did a generation ago but it's also in the minority now when in my mother's generation it was the majority. i think stay at home parent/mom/dad applies but very, very rarely do i see that on surveys or applications that ask for occupation status.
