extended school days???

I'm sure that most have heard about President Obama's idea to extend school days. Do you think this is a good idea? Why or why not? It sounds like it could be helpful to dual income families, but as a sahm, I want my kids home by 3. I also believe that kids have enough difficulty concentrating for 6+ hours a day. Will extending the school day really be good for kids and families? Thoughts?

Not sure how reliable this source is but it touched on the key points.

I could be wrong but I thought the latest news was extending the school year to make summer vacation shorter, not the school hours.

Well, at least initially the talk was about extending the school day and shortening summer vacation.

the article is a bit of an op ed...lol. It basically states that the President's intentions are to extend the school days and shorten summer vacation. Off to find a more reliable source.

You're unsure on the reliability of the Weekly World News? LOL, oh how I miss it in the checkout line since it ended its print edition. I have no idea what those crazy aliens are up to anymore.

I suggest that you may want to read the transcript on Pres Obama's speech which can be found in a slightly different American publication: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/10/us/politics/10text-obama.html?pagewanted=5

I'm in the camp that thinks summer vacation is too long. The last 3 weeks before summer vacation is not conclusive to education as their minds have already left the building, and the new school year seems to take a month to refresh last year's lessons. Eight weeks in the summer would be plenty, IMO; this summer they had 11 weeks off.

I think I'd be happier with a year round schedule, with several weeks off between each quarter.

You'll have to forgive me for not being up on those kinds of sources. The 2nd link was a better source. I only scanned the first article. Without the article, I thought the topic was good for debate.

What are your thoughts on extending the school day? As far as shortening summer break is concerned,my older two never seemed to lose anything over the summer, so refreshers weren't necessary for them. The same holds true for my youngest. My 10 yo however, is another story. I believe that so many kids are completely burnt out educationally by highschool age. Increasing instruction time would likely lend itself to extreme burnout. that is my main concern on increasing school hours.

"I think I'd be happier with a year round schedule, with several weeks off between each quarter."

Add me and Dylan to that. Dylan thinks that Christmas vacation is a week too long. He misses his friends and the activities that go along with being in school. It gets pretty boring for him at home. Not enough going on to occupy his mind or his body.

I have no problems with extending the school day and similarly see no reason to give any consideration for what would or would not be convenient or to the liking of any particular group of parents, regardless of their work status. IOW, the fact that you are a SAHM or the fact that I'm not is completely irrelevant to the topic.
