Goals and Needs

Do you think that everyone has different financial goals and needs, different career goals, and different psychological needs and this is really what this debate is all about? Wouldn't it be a boring world if we all had the same goals and needs?

Yes, that is obviously part of it. Someone was telling me the other day that where she lives, you can buy a nice house for 100K. I have never lived anywhere that was possible. Needs, wants, desires and circumstances vary enormously from person to person.

It stil seems interesting to me to debate the problems/issues associated with either WOH or SAH. It would be nice if we could debate family policies, for example, instead of having these pointless exchanges about how SAH kids are so much better off or how any woman who doesn't WOH is an idiot.

there are areas where you can get a decent home and qol for much less than other areas...i don't know why that should translate to needs, wants varying from person to person esp if there's no need or opportunity direction in areas where the col is steeper.

Simple really, how much money you need to cover basic expenses, such as housing, varies tremendously by area. Not everyone wants to or can live in Lincoln, Nebraska.

In my own case, I COULD move to the country somewhere to get a lower COL, but I would be bored and miserable, and it would be difficult for us to run our business as well as to educate dd adequately.

i can understand there being no opportunity to run a business in another area but feeling miserable or bored in a lower col area? does that come from experience or is it your assumption that low col must mean boredom and misery? tia..fwiw,my absolute dream always has been nyc. unfortunately,dh isn't in a profession that warrants the col there. instead,we've settled in areas where there is a demand for his line of work.

No, I do not assume that low-COL equals boring. Where I live now is low-COL compared to where we lived before, and we chose it, partly, for that reason. However, somewhere in the boonies would be even cheaper, by a lot, but I do not deal with country and small towns well. I grew up in a small town, spent summers in the country as a child and have lived in a small town for a spell as an adult as well. I know that it makes me miserable and I know that the educational opportunities are not what I want for dd.

Yes and yes. Is this supposed to be some sort of epiphanic revelation?

Yes, completely.

Even the "ok" part is different for each of us, though. We all want to have enough money set aside for living expenses, but what more do each of us want? Some of us want to travel. Some of us want to make sure we are leaving something to our children, etc.
