Why does the media portray working moms, always, as having guilt?

doh! I went and looked at one of my receipts--they DO list the number of items!!! Who knew? I wonder why they do that.

And egd, I sincerely apologize--I had no idea grocery store receipts listed the number of items in the total.

I think the only reason mbanc's posts don't give off that much of a blue collar aroma is because it's pretty rare for blue collar work to give a full hour break for lunch. 30 minutes is pretty much the standard here, with a whistle to mark the beginning and end of the break period.

I'm agreeing with you, like I said, "I believe you." I know it's a debate board, but I'm fairly certain that it's okay to occasionally agree with other posters.

I'll have the cm's check TOS on it for you, if you want, tho.

Huh. Guess you learn something new every day.

I've never heard of a cabinet maker/installer who comes and removes your appliances for you. Cabinets, sure. Appliances? Not so much. What if the cabinet maker doesn't have a license to work on plumbing (dishwasher/gas range)?

Of course, my experience with cabinet makers is exclusive to custom cabinets, so perhaps the cabinets in a box folks routinely hire licensed plumbers to install their cabinets.

How can you be sure they all draw a salary? Lauren's dh didn't draw a salary from his dentist office the first few years. Her income sustained the family in the interim. Many small businessowners don't draw a salary the first few years. Often they rely on the spouse's income to carry them and the business until the business is strong enough to sustain paying wages.

My friends used to own a video store. In the 10 years they were in business, the owners never drew a salary. They opened it at just the wrong time--just as the big box video stores were coming in to their own and the business was never profitable enough to permit paying the owners. The store made enough money to sustain itself with free labor from the owners, but the owners lived off retirement income from past jobs.

when they finally sold the business, they made $1500 more money than their net investments over the years. (which isn't a salary or earned income, just in case you're tempted to muddy the waters a bit more).

Geez, even for older elementary school kids I think a crossing the street ban is over the top.

I'm clearly way too old to be a parent :)

The only reason a house flip has a "limited" budget (which in itself is kind of a laugh) is because of the short turn-around time they *try* to plug into it. But someone living in a house while flipping it has the advantage of being able to carry the house longer than someone who lives elsewhere while flipping the house. And in the end, they start to look an awful lot like someone who bought the house and became a "SAHM" so she could manage the renovations herself.

Sure. They're giving up a short term benefit of income right that moment for the expected long-term advantage of great profit.

Kind of like being a SAHM in order to act as a general contractor on renovations to a home that will eventually appreciate enough to have made that SAHM period worth the lost income.

I hope you disclose that to your buyers, who will be left holding the bag on substandard electrical and plumbing work (like having the cabinet installers deal with the gas lines to the stove.)
