Why does the media portray working moms, always, as having guilt?

How so? If you mean that investing in the business becomes an asset for the owner of the business, then yes, if all works out the way it is supposed to. But really, I am not sure what you are getting at here.

Our local catholic school accepts non-catholics but at a higher price. We considered it (even at a high price it was still cheaper than the protestant schools) but it seemed very regmented, more so than public school. Has that been your experience? I wonder it the school is as strict as it sounds.

define *regimented*.....i think discipline through rules and dress code, structure and christian influence are paramount in catholic school..the expectations that catholic school s/b so much better than a public school is a myth. especially,if you're already in a fantastic school district.

This topic has come up before, and it seems to come down to "the traffic today is much heavier and more dangerous than back in the day". While that may be true, today's kids are much more coddled than back in the day, imo.

Liza's school is quite strict but I'll be honest that was one of the reasons I chose it-- there's a lot of emphasis on personal responsbility and respect for one another and the teachers. for example, if she forgets her lunch she can not call me at home to deliver it - they will give her a bag lunch but students can't call home if they forget homework and if they leave somethign at school they can't return for it. And while there's a strict code of conduct I've never felt that they stifled 'who' liza is --on the contrary they've really let her flourish and find her way. The class sizes are small and she feels very comfortable and at home there. Our city elementary and middle schools are huge and liza is the kind of kid who can be easily swallowed up in them. So for me, this little school allows us the kind o small town community feel I was looking for within our city.

And she's getting pushed in all the right ways academically I think -- so for us it is the right choice. It's a struggle at times and we don't qualify for aid b/c of her dad's salary but I think it's worth it.... (plus I LOVE them uniforms! LOL)

Yes. We. Did.

ITA, and there comes a point where lack of sidewalks and/or crossing guards doesn't have a lot to do with it. How are kids supposed to get behind the wheel at 16yo if they can't handle safely crossing an intersection on foot at 12yo?

Hey, life is tough when you're a kid and your bus comes for you at 6:30 or 6:50. But at least they don't have to milk the cows and slop the hogs before school, let alone carry water and start up the fireplace. On the whole, kids today have it pretty easy, imo.

My kids didn't ride the bus for the same reasons. We lived in a rural school district and the routes were long. It was a much better use of their time to not sit on the bus for so long every day.
