Why does the media portray working moms, always, as having guilt?

Off the top of my head...some of the discipline seemed a tad extreme. Maybe not, and maybe more schools should try it. I think there was something about standing when the teacher entered the room and there seemed to be a very long section about dress code. I don't have the online handbook in front of me so I can't give concrete examples, unless you want me to find it. I just remember thinking some of the rules sounded a bit harsh. I didn't think the school really sounded better, either, which is why my dds attend the nice free PS. To be fair, our local catholic school sounds less strict than the one my father attended with the mean nuns ;). I'm fairly certain they would have some colorful things to say about him as well, though, lol.

Thanks for answering. The rules thing sounds about the same, though I'm glad it's working so well for you both!

IKWYM, but OTOH it is possible to get an 8yo to take herself out to a bus stop and get on the bus herself, too.

So why not just have a scheduled quiet time so they're both quiet at the same time and so you can have "you" time?

When my kids are teenagers, they will be able to get themselves around. We are on a main line public bus system and other bike paths for adults. Unfortunately, to and from school are the least accessible places fro mour house- but work places will be well within their reach as will be the city/mall. :) I don't harbor a hope that there will be sidewalks and bike paths to/fro school before they graduate from college, let alone HS- unless Al Gore gets more people on the band wagon. :)

I don't know about you, but around my way, it's just hysterical to watch the kids whose parents were all into bike safety and every other kind of safety when they were little as they tool around town on their bikes with no helmets at all. I think some of us just get tired.

North Carolina is a completely different market than the Washington DC area, so your experience is not one whit probative.
