Why does the media portray working moms, always, as having guilt?

No oddly enough -- I think she meant no guilt -- period. Which would make them both border line sociopaths;)

Possible but not always going to happen. Our bus stop is on a very busy road with blind curves on either side. No way am I letting my dds (7, not 8, but even then) walk there on their own. Maybe closer to middle school, but not yet.

Who said it was necessary? Just *possible*, or maybe *doable*, that's all.

The only place our local elementary school has crossing guards is right in front of the school. The biggest danger to kids is the carpool Moms!

Amen!

The kids' old ES had to take extreme measures to ensure the safety of the kids in the parking lot. It was one more reason I was glad my kids were picked up by the daycare van (separate lane/area for busses) instead of by a parent vehicle.

ITA, I'll talk to a kid who shows up at my house without his/her helmet. Believe it or not, though, I've had a parent tell me she "really thinks it's up to her kid to use his judgment", as if I should have kept my mouth shut. Yet she still had child safety locks on her cabinets when he was little... Fatigue factor, perhaps?

I think it's great that your 11yo can handle his route and deal with busy traffic, no sidewalks, poor visibility, and so on. When he starts driving, he'll have the confidence that comes from knowing he can look where he's going and get around independently.

ITA, if it weren't for all the folks driving their kids to school, in carpools and one by one, there might be less traffic and greater safety. The knots we tie ourselves into over this question of getting the kids to school...
