Why does the media portray working moms, always, as having guilt?

"Since he's been out of full time work he's become an instruments rated pilot, learned two new sports (white water kayaking and got to the elite level in under 8 years; and ice hockey -- yikes!!!). "

I guess he did all this before you had the twins, or while you still employed the nanny, eh?

No generalizations possible on this topic, that's for sure. Yet Lois has an 11yo who can handle a paper route on his bike. Makes me think maybe he was able to handle walking around safely when he was 8 or 9, despite traffic and curves.

It's complicated, but our expectations do play a role here.

"Me time" doesn't really have to involve having the kids be sleeping or even playing quietly. As long as you're not actually playing *with* them, what difference does it make what they're doing?

Exactly! Houseflipping is especially profitable if the "flipper" can either do some of the work him/herself or is willing to take on the GC role, for example. My dad and uncle do much of the work, carpentry, masonry, architectural, interior design, themselves and always GC the project.

so do our INDIVIDUAL kids. each kid is different and as parents we understand their strenghts and limitations better than anyone -- lois's kid sounds very self assured and confident-- Liza is not. period. We tackle this kind of stuff in baby steps -- last night was the first time I left her alone at the house -- while Kelly and I went on a 10 minute power walk loop around our neighborhood. We came back and she was on the front stoop talking tour neighbor and said "go around again mom!" so we did - and she was beside her self that she "did it momma! I stayed alone and I wasn't scared!" this is a kid who used to be afraid to be in the basement playroom while I was on the 2nd floor -- so for her it's a huge step. The day will come when i can send her up and around teh corner and up the hill to visit her friend or down the hill to the bus stop but she's not there yet -- she will be and maybe she'll be 16 when she is but it'll come when SHE's ready for it.

Not quite. If you volunteer, you do not expect any gain, ever. The business owner is investing his/her time and effort in the hoped for future health and profitability of the business. In that sense it is completely analogous to buying a cheap house, fixing it intelligently on the cheap, in the hope of reaping a profit at selling time.

yikes!! there's not carpool courtesy and consideration for the little ones in your area, lois? i'm hoping the school my kids transition to has the same track record as the other district they went to for the past couple years - a crossing guard on every block that surrounded the elementary campus. and a decent, very smoothe carpool line to boot. if not,i'll address it to the principal or pta president. you know, she especially takes a lot of beatings to things like that. heck, even some of us willing and available moms take turns directing those carpool lines. go fiure. :)

Well, to make it totally confusing, this 11 year old who went to camp 600 miles and three states away, who handles a paper route independently, and who called up the owner of a local winebar and asked for an audition for a string quartet he put together with a few friends, absolutely refuses to stay in the house alone for more than about ten minutes.
