Why does the media portray working moms, always, as having guilt?

I read Parents Magazine for about 1 year after dd was born and then threw all my back issues in the trash because it was making me crazy. Now I actively avoid any magazines which try to give me "tips". And I avoid the Good Housekeeping/Redbook etc. branch of magazines too because when not giving tips, they are sharing some wetched story about death, rape, murder, abduction, stalking, infectious disease, terminal illness, fatal or maiming accident happening to children.

Oh my god that's a funny thought. Actually really scary.
We used to paddle class III and IV together. He did class V. I can't imagine the kids anywhere NEAR a rapid right now. Right now, the only rapids our kayaks see (we kept two, his) is the pool. They all pile on and play in them. That's high risk/adventure enough for me at the moment.
In fact we just got back from Lake Tahoe. The waves in the lake Sat and Sun were too big at the shore break for me to feel comfortable with the kids in the water without us right there practically on them.
Nope, there will be no North Fork of the American anytime SOON for them or us.

I don't think it's just idle curiosity to be interested in what other kids are capable of or what limitations their parents perceive them to have. Kids are certainly interested in those aspects of the other kids around them, so why shouldn't a parent be?

LOL, I hear you on the parking lot thing. They know to look but they still don't pay attention.

I don't think I pose as much of a risk to my highschool aged dd as the teen drivers who drive themselves to school.

Will she find love with the youngerson of her best friend/partner of aforementioned local cop/ humble handyman? will she be framed for murder/arson/hit and run/?) really after a while they all run together!

because honestly? I'm too busy living my life and trying to keep it all together... I really truly don't get that involved in what the other kids are doing unless it has a direct effect on Liza.

I think there's a limit to how relevant individual cases are once the topic turns to child safety. Either you believe kids these days are overprotected, or you don't. And whatever opinion you might happen to have, that doesn't mean your own kids fit any sort of common profile.

<>

those aren't the only two options. What about "Some kids are overprotected; some aren't." Which is, imo, the most likely and most accurate view.
