Why does the media portray working moms, always, as having guilt?

You know, I don't find this "bizarre" at all. I think there can be different things at different times in your life, even for people who are very driven. If that weren't the case, nobody like your dh would ever retire, let alone retire early.

I like "some kids are overprotected, some aren't and frankly I don't care b/c none of them are MY kid"

Yes. We. Did.

Somewhat OT, but you know what lately bugs me the most about all these magazines, as well as all the other women's magazines? It's those annoying little "mini-titles" they put at the beginning of any little "pointer", the ones with the cutesy, punning names, like (from the current BHG): "On a Roll - an elastic band designed for pegboards holds rolls of wrapping paper". Makes me want to fling it out the window!

So you did have more "do as you please time" as a SAHM. You were able to spend more time on your house than you could if you WOH.

I have no idea if most people would have employed a general contractor to do what you did, as I have no idea what you did. You have only said that it was extremely time consuming and that subcontractors were there all the time for an extended period of time. The impression I got from that was a major remodel, for which most people would hire a general contractor.

Maybe it's just me, but I've always found I hear a great deal about what the other kids are doing, what they're buying, and where they're going. And I find I have to pay a little attention, too, 'cuz otherwise I might not know what's going on. I mean, I might not anyway, but at least this way I have a fighting chance.

That puts you in the "don't" category. The "some are, some aren't" position isn't debatable, but to some of us, there's a trend in a certain direction, on the whole.

ITA and I think it has always been that way. There have always been kids who were overprotected and kids who weren't protected at all. Most probably fall somewhere in the middle. My dds are what sabina would call overprotected when it comes to the bus stop. However, I have neighbors and in-laws who say I'm not protective enough because I let my kids walk through the neighborhood, even though I can generally see them. To each their own. I'd rather be overprotective than have my kid get flattened by a coal truck flying down a blind and curvy mountain.
