Having "Adult Interaction"

So I mentioned this briefly in another thread but I've been meaning to ask about it. I'm a SAHM to 2 small toddlers. Personally, I don't *care* what other mothers choose to do. I've never inquired about "well, why do you WOH"... It's really none of my business nor do I care. I've been in several playgroups for my kiddos and sure enough, I get bombarded with comments from the WHOM about having "adult interaction". I mean seriously...what do they think I do all day?..Do WOHM think us SAHM just baby talk all day and are prisoners to our home and never speak with adults?.. It's funny, b/c a lot of times, they won't directly make that comment to me but will be passive aggressive...saying something like..."Oh I JUST had to go back to work to get the adult interaction"--waiting for me to respond like "oh yes, I agree, I miss the adult interaction"..... Almost like they are justifying why they work! If you are going to a job just to be around adults, that's pretty pathetic IMO. There are a million things I could get involved in that would be around adults, w/o having to go to work. I don't need work to fullfill my adult talk. I don't get it..Why is this always the first comment out of a WOHM? It's an indirect insult or putdown.

Oh I think I just fell a little in love with you -- what a great post!

Actually, given further review, you're absolutely right.

I assume that any intelligent capable woman who happens to find herself in a similar conversation with you really does have an ulterior motive when saying that.

I can't imagine why...

Gee, LOL, the people I interact with in my very stimulating and fulfilling adult interaction all day are WOHMs, singles, empty-nesters, childless-by-choice, and men in all those categories too. The conversations are frequently friendly, often entertaining, and always decent.

I didn't actually see Felicia or anyone else suggest that the statement could *never* be an intended slam, only that the idea that it is always (or even often) an 'excuse' is laughable. Even if you believe that all us WOHMs are militant and misguided, then you'd have to admit that we would all then be 'drinking the kool-aid' - we wouldn't be using the phrase as an 'excuse', we'd actually believe it (sad, pathetic creatures that we are).

>>woh is an only outlet for intellectual interaction<<

YOUR addition of the term ***ONLY*** to this phrase turns it into a slam, and is a pretty unsophisticated approach to debate. Perhaps more stimulating conversation regarding intellectual pursuits could hone those skills?

"It's more the WOHM that have the chip on their shoulders therefore feeling the need to justify why they work. "

Good lord, why is it so difficult for people to understand that THIS is exactly the kind of crud that perpetuates this whole "debate"?? Are there SAHMs with chips on their shoulders? Sure. Are their WOHMs with chips on theirs? Of course. I don't think it has nearly as much to do with their status as it does their inherent personality.

If that's REALLY the reason she stopped talking to you...consider it a blessing. Why give it a second thought?
