Did you make your decision to SAH/WAH/WOH ft/pt based primarily on objective/tangible factors, or with your heart?

I've always had the feeling that things like climate and latitude are never taken into account in all of these studies. I really love the books on sleep patterns that insist on the importance of using the sun as a guide for sleeping times. Just what the heck are people in very northern or southern latitudes supposed to do?

growing up, my dad despised television and celebrity news..he used to call it the curse of influence. lol. as a parent now, i so understand where he is coming from. i cringe at some of the cr$p that's on television today (like my name is earl, dh gets a kick out of watching it sometimes, yuck....or some of that mtv language and show, bleh). i know attitudes my kids see at school come from images like that.

Of course they do. The larger culture is having an influence on our kids whether we acknowledge it or not. If you don't surround your preteens and teens with people whose values you admire and want them to absorb, they are going to absorb their values from influences you didn't choose. Of course, you can't keep them from the larger negative culture entirely, but you sure can make an effort to counterbalance the messages they are receiving.

You made a general statement that to the casual observer *could* be taken as all-inclusive. Thus the response.

thank you. ita...question is where do you find the best, most valued positive outlets (outside home) for your child to absorb w/o overprotecting them?

I completely agree. I feel the parents/legal guardians are the only ones *raising* the child. Everyone else in my childrens life are an influence. DH and I are the only two parenting them, thus we are *raising them*.

For us....positive sports programs, cub scouts, church, more church, and music teachers. It's always hard to let them go, but my kids have, with other adults, done and learned things I never would have thought possible. Your mileage may vary.

No- it doesn't. I just don't think it equals 'helping to raise'. I would say that these sorts of people would definately be influential, but I wouldn't equate that to 'helping to raise.

And what of the grocery store checker in a small town who takes time to have long conversations with a child every time they come in? (Thinking of my own life and a particular person.) I wouldn't say they helped my parents to raise me, but I would definatley say that they were influential in my life.
