Come first?

I don't mean in an emergency or their general well being.

I'm the "Huge Portions" girl. Carbs, fat, protein..."healthy" food...fast food... I swear, I think I need a stomach stapling. I eat ok, but I eat waaaaayyyyyy too much. Portion control is my nemesis!

I think she is saying that putting kids first doesn't neccesarily mean they will be spoiled.

I think what we've got here is two unstated definitions of "putting kids first" which are in opposition to each other. You have to figure out which one people are using from context and it does get confusing. In fact, this whole debate really comes down to how exactly people are defining "putting kids first".

Because putting kids first doesn't necessarily make them into brats.

No children should not always come first. Personally, I think it is very unhealthy for families to be so focused on the children and their activities that it does not have an identity beyond them. I think it gives children a sense of "power" that is not really theirs to have at such a young age. An example I see at Disney is when a single child is there with the parents and both set of grandparents - what the kid's face. The poor kids is horrified that all these adults are having their fun through him. It is not a fun place to be.

We have sort of a theory that our family is like a ship - moving in one direction and they can choose to be on it or not but with or without them the movie will move forward. We have had to take this tact when our oldest was struggling. A family is more than one part in the whole and when a parent does put themself first it really does show the children how to find balance in their own lives and to care about others.
