In my little anecdotal corner of the world, there are not very many sahps.

I haven't paid much attention, but my impression is that I know just as many WOHMs as SAHMs.

I don't know what you mean by treated better.

I have no idea.

I know so many people who have flexible hours who appear to be SAHMs but aren't so now I just don't even presume to know.

I get snide comments all the time.

That's OK...I currently do not even know the names of either of my next-door neighbors.

I don't think that sounds bad.

I haven't noticed most people really paying attention to the work status of mothers. In both Greece and Denmark (the two places where I hang), it is more or less assumed that most people work. If a parent is staying home, it is assumed to be a temporary situation. People with high-powered careers typically hire help rather than have a parent stay home, and/or have their parents help out (in Greece, that is, Danes just hire help).

In Greece, the SAHMs I have met are either the wives of extremely wealthy men, for whom (the men that is) it is a status symbol to have a pretty wife who does nothing (these women usually have a FT maid and a FT nanny), or they are living in villages.
