how do i convince my husband to let me at least job-share so i can take care of our 3 month old dd? he grew up with his mom working & all his friend's moms working. we can afford it if we cut back on some things, but he doesn't want to cut back & just doesn't understand someone wanting to be a stay at home mom...it doesn't help mycause that the grandmothers will babysit. i'm so unhappy about having to go back to work...he wants me to work full time 1 more year & just doesn't get it! i feel like my heart is being ripped from my chest every time i hink about it.

Do you think that "The Natural Child" contains actual facts, or do you think it contains opinions from the people that run that website?

well of course fun is relative, I just refer my kids to be outside playing with other kids, doing things the kids themselves thought up and control, without adult participation. how many of these things does she do with someone other than her parents? I agree learning is fun but learning takes place in many forms. But when I think about taking 4 hours out of my kids summer day to do "structured homeschooling" that just seems like alot - and with all the things you have outlined if 4 hours is all she is spending on them shes not getting very indepth. I forget how old your dd is my middle one is 6, almost 7 and she is on the go from sunup until sundown - heck, there are days i dont even see my dd 4 hours a day. Maybe once again it is the only child versus the family with multiple children thing.

Actually the bible isn't a work of fiction. It is a work of history. It was written by actual people, describing the events of their lives. It is, in effect, a written documentary.

I myself take issue with the Bible being considered "the word of God". I believe it is, instead, man's interpretation of the word of God. However, if Paul writes that an account of a day in his life, I don't think that is fiction. It is his retelling of the events of the day.

From an excerpt of a review of Warner Keller's "The Bible as History" -- "There is more tangible physical evidence for the Bible than for any other work of literature. Those who contend otherwise simply have not studied the Bible, relying on hearsay and speculation instead; or refuse to believe its truth; or ignore the crushing weight of historiographical and archaeological evidence the 20th century has produced in corroboration with the Biblical accounts. Dr. Keller's work addresses the last issue: fitting the pieces of peoples past with where and when the Bible said they existed. "

"How could someone, a teacher no less, totally miss not only the Industrial Revolution but also it's huge huge impacts on society?"

Not "missing" it LOL. Simply not "focusing" merely on *recent* history (aka Post Industrial Revolutionary history). You do realize that the Industrial Revolution is relatively *recent*, right?

One thing I will say is that perhaps what you describe is hard for me to understand because I cant imagine having a child who would rather make up word problems than swim or ride their bike. But there are alot of different kinds of kids in the world, and just because I cant imagine it doesnt make it right or wrong.

By the way, I hate frogs, but you know when you have kids you have to do what you have to do. LOL

Again, it is my on-going contention that we are basically debating "opinions" here.

Thus, when it comes right down to it, what is "reliable" and "unreliable" is subjective, meaning dependent on the perceiver.

Likewise, when it's all said and done, the "truth" or "validity" of a particular argument is relative to one's own beliefs and experiences.

Furthermore, it's very clear that at the end of the day, I'm not going to change your mind anymore than you're going to change mine. Each one of us is equally entitled to state as well as to argue in favor of our individual opinions. Each one of us is equally entitled to offer evidence which supports or backs up those individual opinions.

So, all in all, the entire debate bascially ends up being a wash. In other words, unless of course, someone wishes to attempt to designate or prove themselves as "the winner", there really is no "winner" here, but rather simply a group of individuals who feel very strongly about their individual "opinions".

I guess the bottom line here is to figure out why we come to debate and post here in the first place. I personally come here to share and discuss my opinions as well as to hear and discuss the opinions of others.

However, the underlying problem (which I have touched on in the past) is that people (myself included) tend to think of and refer to their own subjective "opinions" as being some sort of objective "truths" instead. And viola, the clash between subjectivity vs. objectivity / "opinions" vs. "truths" ultimately results in a debate, and often a heated one at that.

Which reminds me of why a number of months generally pass between my posts (last time it was 8 months) as the discussion was and most likely will continue to bascially be the same old wash. I mean, really, what is the point? No one is going to "win" or "change anyone's mind" here. I guess it's the debate, in and of itself, that I really enjoy. SO, I guess the old saying/adage is true, "It doesn't matter if you win or lose, it's how you play the game."
