how do i convince my husband to let me at least job-share so i can take care of our 3 month old dd? he grew up with his mom working & all his friend's moms working. we can afford it if we cut back on some things, but he doesn't want to cut back & just doesn't understand someone wanting to be a stay at home mom...it doesn't help mycause that the grandmothers will babysit. i'm so unhappy about having to go back to work...he wants me to work full time 1 more year & just doesn't get it! i feel like my heart is being ripped from my chest every time i hink about it.

Do you want a firm number or can I go with your terminology?

I stand corrected. Remember when you said teachers can sometimes tell the difference between WOHM children and SAHM children? Is that better?

Now, how could teachers tell again--behavior, volunteerism, gossip?

Really, I find your views quite...uh...fascinating (as in trainwreck) about this subject.

Batmanuel: I must say, I find your sister strangely compelling. Do you think she'd care to go out with me?”
Arthur: What? NO! She's married. She's got two kids.
Batmanuel: Oh yes, I thought I knew that scent! A soccer mommy! It's my only weakness

You don't really want my answers on this one do you :-)? well, just in case....

"Exactly how many paid holidays, personal days and sick days do you have per year?"

I get 30 days paid vacation, and 60 days per child sick leave per year (120 days sick care total). In addition, I am entitled to 80% pay for up to 2 weeks sick time off per month for myself (the rest of the month is covered by the government at somewhat less than 80%). In other words, however sick I or the kids get, it doesn't cut into any vacation time.

Also, most of my time I work from home and have a completely flexible schedule: I can work evenings and weekends when necessary and take days off during the week to cover kid stuff when necessary.

"Exactly how many paid holidays, personal days and sick days does your dh have per year?"

Dh has 36 days per year paid vacation (plus 1-2 weeks off at Christmas depending on the year) and the same sick leave I have. In addition, he is allowed to flex his schedule as much as he chooses to suit my schedule and the kids' needs. As long as he is averaging 40 or so hours a week over a longer period, he can be completely flexible.

Fwiw, the kids' vacation schedule this year is:

7 weeks at home over the summer (5 weeks with dh on vacation, 2 weeks with me on vacation)
4 weeks in the US over Christmas visiting family (dh has 4 weeks off, I have 2 weeks off)
2 weeks that I will take off with them at the fall break and spring break

Total of 13 weeks off. They spent 3 weeks at the beginning of summer in the afterschool care, which they thoroughly enjoyed because it was like going to camp with their best friends from school (really, please explain why hanging out with friends for 6 hours is such a bad thing?!?! Does your dd never go off to play with other children or is she really with you 24/7 outside of school?).

Sick kids? no problem, we have a total of 240 days per year to cover that (never even came close, my kids are pretty healthy overall). Snow days? Well...hmmm...how to put this? In the 7 years we have lived in Sweden, school has never been closed because of bad weather (there's no such thing as bad weather, only wrong clothing :-)). Even so, we would be able to take the time off (see flex schedule above). Same thing for in-service days.

Do they go to afterschool care? Sure, and a darn good thing too....In the afterschool care they get extra practice time for German, other extended learning opportunities and the chance to play with friends. Since we live fairly far away from all of their friends, they enjoy that extra hour or two after school to play with them. We also invite friends over for playdates (pretty easy for me since I usually pick them up between 2-3pm). I sent ds to afterschool care (for an hour or two) when I was a SAHM....he loved it.

That's what I thought ... Your posts on immunity haven't said anything that I didn't know ... I just wouldn't have been able to express it as well and use the correct terminology, etc.

Choose your friends by their character and your socks by their color.  Choosing your socks by their character makes no sense and choosing your friends by their color is unthinkable.

So are you carrying them to the car? Or are they flying?

It isn't *disallowed* here but it is discouraged. There isn't room in the foyers, hallways and common areas for the parents of 600 children. Not to mention that it isn't safe to have that many adults wandering around. Would be very easy for a kidnapper, molester, gun-toting-angry-postal-employee to walk in and blend in with the masses.

Our administration, faculty and PTA have spent EXTENSIVE time dissecting and analyzing our pickup/dropoff procedures. The district safety officer (former policeman and teacher) has been involved. Our system is the best it can be given the current logistical parameters.

Which is why I'm so glad I don't have to be a part of the chaos every morning and afternoon ...
