how do i convince my husband to let me at least job-share so i can take care of our 3 month old dd? he grew up with his mom working & all his friend's moms working. we can afford it if we cut back on some things, but he doesn't want to cut back & just doesn't understand someone wanting to be a stay at home mom...it doesn't help mycause that the grandmothers will babysit. i'm so unhappy about having to go back to work...he wants me to work full time 1 more year & just doesn't get it! i feel like my heart is being ripped from my chest every time i hink about it.

So at your school you happen to be privy to the reasonings behind the parents driving their children to/from school? Interesting. You must live in a very crunchy granola AP sort of town. (?)

Your school is certainly not the 'norm' then. Lucky you.

I take it you are unfamiliar with the standardized part of the standardized testing requirements?

The book discusses the nature and nurture components of producing a sociopath. "We can speculate that the neurobiological underpinnings of the core personality features of sociopathy are as much as 50 percent heritable." The other 50 percent is tough to figure out. The author talks about how our very (North American) culture with its emphasis on individualism, "tends to foster the development of antisocial behavior, and also to disguise it."

So the environmental influences on sociopathy could be more about what our society values and how our culture works than how individual sets of parents treat their children. One of my favorite blurbs in the whole book is this:

"We might feel a little less daunted if we were to identify a set of child-rearing practicies that we could try to correct in our lifetimes. But perhaps society is the true parent of certain things, and we will eventually find that, as William Ralph Inge said in the early twentieth century, "The proper time to influence the character of a child is about 100 years before he is born.""

Yeah- 15min is alot different than the almost 2hr ride I had as a kid... Still- IMO it's far safer for a child to ride with a seatbelt, and while I'd trust my own kid for 15 min, I know of plenty of kids that I wouldn't trust *with* my kid for that same 15min.... *shrugs*

Nope. Didn't claim to be. I based my *theory* on *observation*. I have no idea if it is right or not.

What I do know is 1) we have a high percentage of SAHMs, 2) we have a large number of kids going to extracurricular activities right after school and 3) pickup/dropoff is a chaotic nightmare.

The rest I hypothesize from observations of many mothers and conversations with many mothers.

Choose your friends by their character and your socks by their color.  Choosing your socks by their character makes no sense and choosing your friends by their color is unthinkable.

"Of course dh and I care about that; we want her to be successful."

So you misspoke when you said you "could not care less"?

No, I really do not care when she goes to bed or gets up. If she wants to stay up all night and sleep all day, it's fine with me. If she can find a way to succeed at school and live her life that way.

Just because it wasn't written in a journal (to be edited later) doesn't mean it wasn't a REAL homeschooling day.
