Something I heard yesterday in reference to my decision to return to work: "Well, the good thing is you'll be showing your kids that it's okay for a mom to have a career."

This threw me. I've never felt that my children weren't proud of me no matter what

Me either. I went to a community college mostly because it was expected and I didn't have any other ideas of what I wanted to do after high school. It was there that I met dh so those 3 years weren't a total loss. I also got an AA degree in history and a certificate in Library Science. It was when I got a job at an alterations place that I found my career. All of my job experiences since then has involved sewing in one way or another.

I think that as long as the parents are there for the children when needed, it really doesn't occur to children to contemplate their parents' work status. At 28 years old someone asked me whether my mother worked or stayed at home when I was little. I *honestly* didn't know and had to call her up to ask. Turns out she worked as a respiratory therapist. She dropped me off at school, she picked me up from school, she was at every important event - she was never "missing", so it didn't matter where she was and it never occurred to me to ask. In retrospect, I remembered her talking about her job, but it didn't impact my life at all (as far as I was concerned at the time), so it never registered as important.

I never knew, and the things I thought about maybe doing I would never have said out loud to anyone.

I did not think I would SAH, but I felt bad about having ambitions because of my mother. I knew I had options (or at least I thought I did), but I felt guilty at the thought of exercising them. It is similar to being from a working class family and being the first ever college kid. It often gives rise to tensions.

Why would you need to put it in those terms? Is it not good enough that you trained to do a job you really like and that you find your work worthwhile and important?

"In fact, they'd probably PREFER that I work just so that they could have unsupervised internet surfing time, phone conversations, and unlimited access to the fridge ;)"

Maybe it is because my kid is older than yours, but why would you limit access to food, phone or internet for your kids?

Tell them what my Mom told us. "We both work because if we end up hating you when you're teens, we'll be able to afford military school."

LOL. (and besides, we knew that was an empty threat. No WAY they could afford military school. ;)
