Did anyone see the Wall Street Journal today? An article on the "Personal Journal" page talks about two studies that are coming out -- one being the already referenced NICHD study -- that shows 45+ hours a week of day can do harm to a child. What I found interesting about it is that the NICHD study says *anything* other than mom care is other care!! What happened to Dad?

The other article, in the same section, is an article about how parents are outsourcing everything now, including potty training! The article states that parents will send a child to a batting coach instead of just playing catch in the backyard. Another service, that costs $60 an hour (!), will help teach your child how to ride a bike!

I don't have an online subscription to the Journal, so I can't post the stories here. Does anyone else have one?

Well, you can *say* anything you want, but John was in othercare at *least* that long (and often longer if I went to the field or had CQ) during his first 9 months. Didn't create issues (beyond the immediate ones, namely me missing the hell out of him), and didn't compromise our bond. Wouldnt have been my first choice and I left the Army because I felt in the long term, it wasn't a good choice, but still and all 9 months is 9 months AND it was the everso allegedly important FIRST 9 months.

So you can't tell me the balance when a parent chooses to work a job that has crazy hours because they want to further their career and that's what it takes to do so?

When does this parent in family A who works 10-15 hour days actually gets family quality time?

I was a SAHM for 12 years and the fact that I was there did nothing to change the fact that my kids missed their daddy when he could not be there for dinner/bedtime etc. Parents are not interchangable, you cannot not replace the time that your DH doesn't get to spend with his children by spending more time with them.

FWIW, as I posted before...both of my children also loved the gym daycare.

I see you're once again going to omit the facts that 1.) like M3T, you were a sahm, and 2.) you never used 2 different dcs within an 11-hr period 2 - 3 times each week.

Yes, I'm a regular.

<> Yes, absolutely. The child is not then in 2 dcs for an 11-hr period, 2 -3 x/wk, but rather is with family who loves and cares for him.

<> I've never let this board get to me. I expect these silly pile-ons too. (I think they make women look pretty bad, BTW, and I'm happy never to join in on them). And I absolutely stand by my every word in the babies fight sleep thread. Sorry....

And this one is silly too: <> If I went back to work, it does not mean that my DH would have more time with the children. In fact, he'd have to give up his relaxed time with them in the mornings as we prepare three children for school and daycares. Plus, I'd have to shower, dress, do makeup, before we left for work - now I do that whenever time allows. Because I'm home 24/7, it makes his life a little easier and his time with the children pretty much pure quality time.
