Did anyone see the Wall Street Journal today? An article on the "Personal Journal" page talks about two studies that are coming out -- one being the already referenced NICHD study -- that shows 45+ hours a week of day can do harm to a child. What I found interesting about it is that the NICHD study says *anything* other than mom care is other care!! What happened to Dad?

The other article, in the same section, is an article about how parents are outsourcing everything now, including potty training! The article states that parents will send a child to a batting coach instead of just playing catch in the backyard. Another service, that costs $60 an hour (!), will help teach your child how to ride a bike!

I don't have an online subscription to the Journal, so I can't post the stories here. Does anyone else have one?

Plus, it is not reccommended to excersize before going to bed - as it usually causes people to rev up for a few hours.

It's a bit ironic to hear the opposition described as a "blubbering defense" given that its accuser thinks the debate comes to a "screahing holt" and that Moms "bare" children. Not that I'm against typos, mind you, but it seems your own blubbering backyard could use a bit of attention before you start mocking ours.

That aside, I've yet to see even one gym with hours that begin at 4:30am or extend as late as 11pm. The Y I belong to (and use about 2 times a week) has the most flexible hours I've experienced with doors opening at 6am (about 15 minutes after I have to hit the road for work) and they close at 9pm (my bedtime in order to rise at 4:30am in order to be ready to hit the road at 5:45am). Going to the Y straight after work isn't really feasible since the Y sponsors a swim team from 4:30p til 7p, during which time only one swim lane is available for open lap swimming.

I'll concede to m3t that some gyms are open those hours. We have one here that is 24hours a day. It, however, is AT LEAST 3x the cost of the "regular hours" gym (about 6am to 9pm). It is also frequented by college guys and isn't the safest nor most comfortable environment for a young mother. It is pretty much unfeasible for most of the mothers I know.

oh now i get the *bare* children and mj....yea whatever.

this blubbering debate on both sides has been going on for almost 100 posts now. guilty as charged. but do tell me if you can, why your ys hours aren't more flexible? maybe because there isn't the demand for it?

Guess you missed the unaffordable and unsafe parts.

Typical.

I obviously can't speak for cyduck. But the Y here has horrible hours and horrible facilities because they are WAYYYY underfunded. They are really stuggling right now to get sponsorships and support from the non-member community.

"in my world, dh *crazy* hours are quite compatible because my role balances his role."

You might feel that way, but your children may well grow up with a *very* different opinion of the workaholic dad. You can't make up for the lack of time he has with the kids. Period.

But, apparently, you think we're supposed to suck down 3 times the cost and care nothing for our personal safety.

Isn't bankrupting the family coffers and endangering the safety of 50-100% of the wage earners in the family a bit steep of a price to pay for exercise in your opinion?

I love how you blithely dismiss significant issues like that to pretend Hollie doesnt like exercising with "dudes".
