I'm mostly a lurker, but I have a question that I wanted to know opinions on.

Is there value to child care?

I'm talking about the day-to-day, hour-by-hour

Did this girl have sick/personal/vacation days? Are all her jobs in low paying convenience places?

IME, it has very little to do with luck. It's about education, planning, experience and hard work to make oneself a trusted employee. There may be smidgen of little luck involved, because not everyone can count on good health or factor in a global recession.

absolutely agree-- and also personal responsibilty for getting the work done no matter how the schedule flexes -- I write alot of grants at night on my lap top and I answer alot of emails at 6am in exchange for flexing as I need to to pickup Liza when she's with me.

no ,she had other higher paying job but with 2 kids at the time and having a similar situation to my own (no one to watch the kids and even w/2 incomes not being able to afford the high childcare cost around where i live which is about $200 to 250 per kid),she had to seek a part time position and thoes kind of jobs usually have employers that expect you to practically ignore your obligations as a parent in order to do their bidding.these employers are not very understanding .

I agree here as well, I think flexing a schedule goes both ways, ime.
