How do you think the economy will affect decisions by women to stay at home versus work? With so many people losing jobs, do you think more women will be forced back into a job to help out (or take over) family finances? Is SAH parenting

Yes, I am on a nine month contract, and if I teach over the summer, it is extra pay. I teach summer school about two years out of three, by preference.

I consider Trader Joe's brand to be the house brand/store brand/no name brand for THAT store. Just like at Lucky's it's Sunny Select or whatever, and at CVS it's well, CVS.

Isn't middle school a difficult time for any child to leave behind school friends?

I don't think that is really that much of a difference when you do the comparision from area to area, you are still making $28,000 MORE than what is considered the same as your current salary.

I have a close friend who lived in DFW and she described it that way too - cultural wasteland.

Nah, he's a pretty adaptable kid, went to public elementary school, hangs with a lot of the local public school kids in church youth group and music and neighborhood and other activities, and a lot of the private school kids do transition to public in high school, especially those with some talent in music, sports, or drama. The private high school has some pretty impressive academics, but with a small student body, they just don't have the bodies to make up a full orchestra or a large ensemble cast for a musical, or even a particularly competitive basketball team. Half or more of his friends are already in the public high school. I told him after he finished his freshman year that he could choose to go back to public, but he decided to stay at the private school this year to finish his language sequence. I think this wavering about whether to go to public has become a rite of spring for him, but this year the balance may tip toward public. We'll see.

High COL areas have become a REAL problem in academia. Some of the higher areas have been offering subsidized housing for new professors for awhile now. Places like Stanford and three of the California campuses (UCSB, UCLA and Berkeley)....but they are STILL having trouble retaining faculty after the seven years or subsidy are over or whatever.
