How do you think the economy will affect decisions by women to stay at home versus work? With so many people losing jobs, do you think more women will be forced back into a job to help out (or take over) family finances? Is SAH parenting

How many jobs were there for associate professors of medieval European history at Carnegie Research I institutions in your area open this year?

Don't bother researching; I already know the answer. Zero.

There was ONE in the entire country this year; in North Carolina.

That it's a waste of time and meaningless to theorize about how much or how little I could make anywhere else in the country now doing what I do, since there isn't much possibility for mobility anyway. I might have considered applying for the North Carolina job since that is an area of the country I love if it were not for the fact that (a) I have rather gotten used to living in the same zip code with my husband and children, and (b) I have ten grad students in the pipeline now and it would be a nasty thing to pick up stakes and move and leave them without a mentor considering most of them actually moved across the country themselves to work with me, and (c) I am at the point where building up years toward pension and retiremment is pretty important to me. So I'm staying here.

Doesn't pretty much every school split in middle school?

You do realize, don't you, that you can't just put "professor" into those wizards and come up with accurate numbers? Just on our campus alone, a "professor" can be making anywhere from $40Kish to $150Kish, dependent mainly upon field, but also upon a number of other factors. And fields are also geographically affected. Some fields can't be done at just any college anywhere (i.e. you won't see Marine Biology professors in Oklahoma). Univerisities differ too. You won't see a Professor of Soil Science at Boston U. And you won't see a law professor at Langston.

My elementary school goes to the same middle school and then follows to the same high school.
