How do you think the economy will affect decisions by women to stay at home versus work? With so many people losing jobs, do you think more women will be forced back into a job to help out (or take over) family finances? Is SAH parenting

I call bull! You did NOT compare HER job in your area .. you used a median salary for "professor" which is a completely inaccurate picture of her job.

You really think that fussing over an expensive pair of running shoes means someone is severely limited in purchase price of any future homes?

Actually, it's easier for one (well, one "in the know") to put a price tag on than you might think. For most OSU faculty, their benefits are equivalent to 31.38% of their salary. So a history professor making $50K a year here is receiving $15,690 in additional compensation in the form of benefits. Staff have it even better (because we have paid sick and vacation). Most staff making $50K a year receive $19,250 in additional compensation (38.5%) I actually have it better than many. My division has a fringe rate of 41.39%; the highest across the whole university system.

I just realized, I'm still waiting for the extremely frugal items, can you answer that question for me please?

But benefits....do you mean the besides the numerous ones that have already been mentioned today or do you need me to repeat those?

Well, you were making a comparison to bord's town ... which is a college town. And, like I said, what you stated is very possibly true in general, but it isn't true everywhere, especially in college towns. And I find this very hypocritical. You're willing to compare bord's salary by using the median salary for "professor", completely disregarding the work she actually does, but are now trying to tell me that I can't make a comparison (which I didn't even do) without knowing what type of work you'd actually go for.

I don't need to research it to know it's bull. You posted that you used the median salary for "professor". that's an inaccurately broad term for what bord does. And lets not forget that I see salaries, on a daily basis, for a wide range of professors from multiple schools on a daily basis. I don't need to do research to know that the range is so wide that "median" can't give one a true idea of what a particular person might make/do.
