How do you think the economy will affect decisions by women to stay at home versus work? With so many people losing jobs, do you think more women will be forced back into a job to help out (or take over) family finances? Is SAH parenting

How is putting time and energy into choosing the right school for your child not putting your time and energy into your child?

And you want your kids to take different things away from their academic experience than I want for my children.

but what if the superior schools in your superior town turned out not to be a good fit for your children?

That you could reach that "conclusion" shows you clearly don't get the debate.

I did all that. Our school is extremely well regarded. People move into its district simply to pull their kids out of private school and send them here. However, it is not a great fit for all the kids. No school is. They do astoundingly well with the above average and GT kids. They do astoundingly well with the ADD, ADHD and some of the more moderate/severe kids on the Autism spectrum. They do very well with the ESOL kids. They do very well with the mild-moderate LD kids. They don't do so well in the social skill development arena and they don't do so well in the severe LD arena. (All of the above are not separate subgroups and overlap in many places.) Different schools have different pulses and personalities and outlooks - that can change in one year with the change of a Principal or a few key teacher retirements or change in the student body. Different grades within the school can be vastly different in cultures.

Our school is going through a transition. I am in the last of the very flexible schedule dual wohps, woh/ptwoh or sah/woh because we can afford it because we bought 10+ years ago and our mortgages are very low. It is turning over to the intense dual wohps (who need both salaries to pay the inflated mortgage) and the blond cheer leader type sahps who have lunch and play tennis (okay I am stereotyping, I admit it). As a result, number of people who volunteer is down, but there are more people who write big checks - so the PTA budget is still six figures.

"You've explained before that you knew even as crawlers, your children were going to do fine at their local school." No what I've said is that based on how my other 4 have done and seeing what my 3 and 5 year old are like I can tell they will most likely do fine.

But if the parent is "literally blind" by choice, sitting in the back of a classroom, missing work, seeing 1 teacher in 1 section (say there are 2 third grade classes, for instance) tells next to nothing anyway.
