How do you think the economy will affect decisions by women to stay at home versus work? With so many people losing jobs, do you think more women will be forced back into a job to help out (or take over) family finances? Is SAH parenting

Back when I had to do it the first time, I did a lot of reading to learn about the general system and the content of the curricula used. Then I talked to parents, but that is not always all that informative. Then I went and met with the principals at the two nearest schools, and also met with the people at the most logical (from a logistics POV) private school. The meetings with the principals were sufficient to rule out the publics in that district, it was, btw, on the face of it a very good district, and the visit to the private school led to the same conclusion. It was a long process, but mostly because I had to work out exactly what my priorities were.

What? I'm not lifting my own standards, you don't know any school districts that suck? There are plenty in this country. Several of the elemrntary schools in our district qualify for Ohio Ed Choice because they are failing schools does that really sound like a good school district?

"i don't know where you live."

Nope but I do, I graduated from the school district we live in so I do.

"guess it depends on your perspective. I see many kids who have been in 2-3 elementary schools - their parents have jobs that move them from place to place every few years. Kids, for the most part, adapt very well.

but don't you think that's a bit different than switching schools every couple years because you're dissatisfied with a curriculum? "

No it don't. For the kid, the experience is very similar.

"that is not common IMO/E. "

That's because you don't live where I live. We have a 10%+ change in kids every year. It ebbs and flows- I have seen the numbers in my kids grade change from 60 to 75 in one year and a few years later be back to 63. We have many military families, State department families, federal government transfers foreign state department families (aka Diplomats and Embassy staff), foreign and US company temporary stays. YDS's good friend (4th grade), who came in 1st grade, left in December for Colorado. His parents work for the BLM and they came to do their obliglatory DC gig for a few years and now they are back in the field.

You don't have to be so obnoxious about my 2 tax bills.

We were fortunate, my kids went to preschool there, we liked it, we enrolled them. I knew several people that worked there including 2 teachers who go to our church, one has been a friend of mine since we were 9. Had it not worked out I would

That does sound like a good situation. You had a chance to get to know the school gradually.

"(Some parents simply can't enunciate the words "my child" and "public school" in the same breath.)"

Maybe not but as far as my family only because of the school district we live in, had we been able to afford a house in a neighboring district my kids would be in public school. I love our school so I am glad it worked out this way.
