How do you think the economy will affect decisions by women to stay at home versus work? With so many people losing jobs, do you think more women will be forced back into a job to help out (or take over) family finances? Is SAH parenting

I have first hand experience of a child changing elementary schools for one year- but it was not because of a move.

I have close second hand experience of children changing schools several times in elementary. Like anything, it is a mixed bag of pluses and negatives. For the most part, the benefits balance out the negatives.

I disagree.

There can be plenty of legitimate reasons for switching schools - even cutting job transfers or family moves out of the picture.

The first one that comes to mind is if an elementary school aged child is diagnosed with a learning disability that was not diagnosed prior to enrollment at School #1. School #1 is deemed not to be the right environment for that child with that particular learning disability, for whatever reasons, so in consultation with professionals treating the child, child switches goes to School #2.

Then the child ages out of elementary school at what, 6th grade? and they move to school #3.

Three schools before 8th grade. One transfer because of suitability for the child, one due to matriculation. All legitimate IMO.

ROFL! What else is "school shopping" if not putting time into one's children? Do people w/o children "school shop"?

Well. We put a lot of time into it this fall, but we were looking at schools for 2 kids, public and private. I'm glad we're done.

Or, check this out. There's a high school near me in a very chi-chi part of town. For years, parents have done all they could to move into that part of town, banking on someday getting their kids into that high school. Guess what, a couple of years ago it started going down hill fast. It's now a wreck. Suddenly no one wants their kids to attend there anymore. So much for careful research and planning about where to live.

I switched continents from a Roman Catholic state school in Scotland for primary education to a Roman Catholic hs in the US. The change was rather dramatic. I was ok with language arts, math, science, and religion on the transfer, but social studies and history were completely baffling.
