How do you think the economy will affect decisions by women to stay at home versus work? With so many people losing jobs, do you think more women will be forced back into a job to help out (or take over) family finances? Is SAH parenting

How in the world is this relevant?

If egd paid substantially less than FMV for their home, it wouldn't be an apples to apples comparison.

Dang, you busted me and my 5 kitchen gadgets a day habit! You saw through my ruse of a story that student loan payments are keeping me down. ;-)

Because supporting a family cost money and how much it cost for food, shelter and clothing is about cost of living.

High col is only as much of a handicap as one makes it.

So let's say I'm living in Oklahoma in a 2-bedroom apartment with my DH and 2 kids, and we are able to have the option to SAH because our rent is $450 a month, dial-up internet, no cable, no cell phones, DH takes the bus to work, and we are very frugal in every aspect of our spending. How would we be able to continue to have the choice of whether to SAH if we suddenly move to someplace where even a 1-bedroom apartment costs $900 a month?

I'm sorry, but cost of living DOES directly affect one's living options.

Couldn't those people in the low col areas, also purchase their good on the internet, so that would be a wash in comparing, correct?

Why would that be the case?

Rents in high col areas are very high too. The avg monthly rent in the SF is well over 2k, while in Houston, its well under 1K.

Who has the luxury to have an employer pay one's permanent housing costs? Non sequitur

< you may get a better bargain on a refrigerator in a high col area than in the poorest one where people are taken advantage of with "payment plans" and an inability to ship/transport.>

You do know you can order one time big ticket items on the internet, often with free shipping in the deal?

when I got divorced I researched renting versus buying. I could not find an apartment to rent for me and the girl for less than my mortgage was with my ex husband...and the ones that WERE less than that were in areas that I would not have felt safe living alone with a child (who at the tiem was 5) so I made the decision to buy even though itw as a stretch -- it was the right thing to do. But rents around here are tough --although they may be coming down a smidge...

You can make a written offer on a house on the internet.
