How do you think the economy will affect decisions by women to stay at home versus work? With so many people losing jobs, do you think more women will be forced back into a job to help out (or take over) family finances? Is SAH parenting

IMO, it is the *choice* to have a sahp that is the luxury. Having the *choice* to be a ctwohp or ptwohp or ctsahp is a luxury not every family has.

It is the ability to have the *choice* to be a ctsahp or actwohp or a ct-ptwoh is the luxury. The lifestyle that results from that choice may or may not be luxurious.

"many if not most SAHMs in my experience live below their means."

As far as I know, living above or below ones means isn't related to woh/sah status. I don't know the intimate financial details of most of my friends. I do know that DH and I tend to gravitate to people who have similar world views and as a result seem to have similar spending habits (we have talked about budgets and financial planning in the general sense) - although the woh/sah decisions are all over the map. Our anecdotal "experiences" seem to cancel each other out.

you know, having choices is far greater than what a net worth should look like.

Exactly, it's the choice that is the luxury.

"My husband's income is enough."

And that's what makes it a luxury. Having a SAHM is a luxury that is available only to those whose husbands make enough. If your husband suddenly lost his job (plausible in this economy) and could only find a job paying half as much so that you would have to get a job too, then you would realize that your former way of life had been a luxury.
