How do you think the economy will affect decisions by women to stay at home versus work? With so many people losing jobs, do you think more women will be forced back into a job to help out (or take over) family finances? Is SAH parenting

Outside of housing costs, can you explain what living costs you are assuming Egd pays less for than you?

So let's say I were to follow your advice in my previous Oklahoma frugal family example, and buy my groceries and clothes online (DH's job covers most prescriptions, and in the example he takes the bus, so no car expense there either). You expect buying my food and clothes online to make a $450 a month difference? Sorry, but buying online wouldn't be nearly enough for me to retain my SAH/WOH choice if the family moved to a high COL area.

"But are a box of cereal, fruit, milk, eggs in the grocery stores, your Giorgio Armani suits, etc. so much higher where you live than where Egd does? "

In general, yes. Especially, if you are looking for similar quality of fruit. I am always amazed how much LESS groceries cost nearly everywhere I have visited - compared to here. I am also amazed at the high quality of fresh fruit and veggies available elsewhere.

I don't think so. I think you understand just fine.

Sheesh....THAT'S what you have been on about the last few hundred posts? That PNJ mentioned that the cost of living is higher on Long Island than in the Houston area? Long Island was brought up as an example of a place where you would need more money to have the same standard of living as in the place where EGD lives now. I don't know what's so opaque about that.

OK, Paris. Let's forget anybody ever mentioned Long Island, since it seems to be confusing some people. Let's see her try to live on the same income in Paris, France. Nobody is in Paris as far as I know, although I would like to be.....the point is, it's more expensive to live in Paris than it is in Houston. Could we get back to the debate now?

I think I see the issue now. You think we are debating personal situations, i.e., Crusader's and Egd's. The rest of us are debating ideas, the idea that the same salary can mean different things in different areas because of the different COLs.

I moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to the midwest in 1996. We were paying more in rent for a 1200 square foot apartment in the Bay Area than we paid monthly to OWN a 3500 square foot condominium. Our other costs almost evened out, but the difference in our standard of living and the difference in our housing payments were amazing. I actually took a small pay cut to move to the midwest, but I never even felt the difference.
