How do you think the economy will affect decisions by women to stay at home versus work? With so many people losing jobs, do you think more women will be forced back into a job to help out (or take over) family finances? Is SAH parenting

I live in a high col area and can purchase a home for $150,000 right now. Of course you would have to put alot of money into them but you can still get it for that price.

I don't know if you saw my comment about a friend of mine elsewhere in the thread....but they have recently moved to the Houston area and have almost twice the house they had in a better school district

No I don't. In fact, let's assume that the cost of food, gas, and clothing are exactly the same in our new city and that the only difference is the cost of housing. Anything much above $450 a month will take away my option to SAH, and there is no (safe) place for a family of 4 to live in the Bay area or New York City for under $500 a month. So again, even if we are only talking about housing costs, an area's cost of living is still directly relevant to a person's ability to continue to have a choice of work status.

>> the more i read and listen, the more i wonder if the COL in other areas have more to do with standards of living than actual COL. <<

I suppose you could say that here. I mean, you can buy a relatively affordable house in my city if you don't mind it being a dump with drug dealers living next door and people being shot to death on the corner. If that's not an SOL you mind, that is.

Have you researched your ability to buy a single family home in other major metro areas for $150,000?

I don't even think you can rent a studio apartment anywhere in the Bay Area for under $500!

That's ok, I am pretty much done debating over this as it is crystal clear what I posted and how astray it went right away. Thanks anyway :)

"i mean,ok so i might have to settle for a smaller house in a higher COL area. but what else? does a gallon of milk cost more? eggs? meat?"

Yes to all of those. That's what cost of living means. Military people get stationed here & go into sticker shock. Every time they go out to eat they talk about how much meals are compared to "back home" in places like Tx and other Low cola areas. Groceries are more, gas is more, all the standard things you buy.
