How do you think the economy will affect decisions by women to stay at home versus work? With so many people losing jobs, do you think more women will be forced back into a job to help out (or take over) family finances? Is SAH parenting

But surely I can make up the thousand dollar difference by doing my own nails, clipping coupons and shopping at thrift stores, right?

You can get a decent place in a safe neighborhood for a family of 4 in NYC for $500 a month? Where? (Seriously, because DH wants to move there someday)

If you're moving to a LOWER COL area, then in theory your SOL would not change.
But if you're moving to a HIGHER COL area, then there are many reasons why it might.

No, silly... you're only going to make up that thousand dollar difference by buying your gasoline and Cheerios ONLINE! Haven't you been paying attention?

I think the issue at hand is that a person often can't maintain their SAME SOL on their SAME income if they move from a low col are to a high col area.
Obviously a person that can afford a two-bedroom house in the Bay area could, with the same salary, maintain their same SOL in Houston. Of course, they might be able to choose to elevate their SOL, but they don't have to. Someone from a low COL area would have to lower their SOL if they moved to a higher COL area on the same salary.
