How do you think the economy will affect decisions by women to stay at home versus work? With so many people losing jobs, do you think more women will be forced back into a job to help out (or take over) family finances? Is SAH parenting

Good example again how ridiculous is the notion that only certain people can live in high col areas.

Well, I'll concede that a box of fruit loops costs less in RI since I lived there 4 dreary, wet, dismal years of my life.

I lived in a high COL area, and while it was true that medicines, food, and clothing were not that different from when I moved to the low COL area, it was the difference in having the money for the medicine without having to scrimp on food, or being able to buy whatever clothes I needed without having to sacrifice somewhere else. Living in a lower COL means that when I do need or want something, I do not have to worry much about what it is I am NOT getting that month. It means that when my sixteen year old says, "Oh I forgot; I need fifteen dollars for a service project my home room is doing this month" I can hand him fifteen dollars without thinking "Uh oh...there goes lunch for the next two days." I've been in the "uh oh, there goes lunch" position way too often in my life to think of it as being fun or romantic or anything other than a right royal pain in the rear.

Ok not EVERY person lives off their salaries. Very poor people on welfare live off of that. And very rich people with substantial investments can live off the dividends from those investments. But for everybody in between extreme poverty and extreme wealth they live off their salaries.

Well, evidently if you think really, really positively, you can also live off your lottery winnings. You don't work, you just somehow attract money to you.

I just compared some grocery prices at the same chain of stores between Washington, D.C. and the suburbs of Dallas.

85% ground beef - Dallas, $1.99/lb; DC, $2.99/lb.

rotisserie chicken to go - Dallas, $5.99; DC, $8.99

granulated sugar - Dallas, 4 lb bag for $0.99; DC, 5 lb bag for $2.99

bacon - Dallas, $2.99; DC $6.99

A few things were identical or nearly so: grapes, orange juice, and Texas Toast.

If you understood me the first time, where do you get Beverly Hills and diamonds?

And oh, PS: I'm still waiting for you to share with us all what these magical other sources of income are that people live off of in addition to their salaries.

What are these people living off of who aren't living off of salary, welfare or dividends? WHAT exactly is their source of income?
