How do you think the economy will affect decisions by women to stay at home versus work? With so many people losing jobs, do you think more women will be forced back into a job to help out (or take over) family finances? Is SAH parenting

I've rarely been able to weed through the morass of sarcasm in your posts to see any meaningful debate.

What stops you from doing that whenever you wish?

We just joined Costco. I am hoping that will help with staples and nonperishables!

>> You and PKA made it sound like you take a salary and stretch it as far as it goes in the area you happen to live and then determine if you can afford to live with that col. <<

I won't speak for PKA, but I will speak for myself. That is NOT what I meant at all. But that is an interesting interpretation.

Because 2/3 of American homeowners have mortgages, I think that is a pretty good assumption. And the third that don't probably are more than likely 55+.

And I'm STILL wondering what one is supposed to do, in this hypothetical move from a low COL area to a high COL area, when one budgets as modestly as possible and STILL doesn't have enough to meet basic needs.

That question hasn't been answered, and I'm starting to believe it won't ever be.

I'm still waiting to hear how an already frugal family can maintain the same standard of living on the same income in a place where housing costs 2-3 times as much.

oh Providence is a TOTALLY different city than it was when you were at Brown -- if you have a chance you should come up for waterfire some summer night -- truly gorgeous and great fun for a family --

I remember my brother living in a typical RI triple decker that tipped sideways right behind the police station in the Chad Brown section of town his senior year at PC -- my mother was less than thrilled -- of course that wasin 1978- the city has changed so much since then -- of course I like to say it's b/c of my brothers crakerjack prosecuting of crime for the past 23 years LOL
