How do you think the economy will affect decisions by women to stay at home versus work? With so many people losing jobs, do you think more women will be forced back into a job to help out (or take over) family finances? Is SAH parenting

The comparision would be to see how much you would need to make compared to your current salary to live in that town. I was asked about the difference in COL and that is what it is. If you look closely the only difference in COL on that list is the housing.

I was trying to break into a very difficult field to break into -- academia -- and knew that having a tenure track job would make it much easier to get another one down the line. Taking a job in the Bay Area was a calculated risk; my husband and I knew that it was likely to cost us money in the short run, but we figured we would enjoy the area to the best of our ability -- it really is a wonderful, beautiful, almost magical place to live. We spent almost every weekend exploring around during the time my husband was able to be there with us. Great memories, and I was able to publish enough and build up enough of a teaching track record to be competitive for the job I have now. So it worked out great for us.

When it is only the housing then yes, it is not much as it would equal out. It is not an extra money on top of your paycheck like child support is.

I didn't have a mortgage in the high COL area; we rented for three years. And I have never had a car payment in my life. No, we had the same number of bills -- rent (replaced by mortgage when we moved), groceries, utilities, insurance, child care, that sort of thing.

The term "house" is perfectly clear.

Tell me where there is a higher col because you were unable to establish DC and NoVa has a higher COL.

Just stop with the crap like "child support is extra money." Just. Stop.
