How do you think the economy will affect decisions by women to stay at home versus work? With so many people losing jobs, do you think more women will be forced back into a job to help out (or take over) family finances? Is SAH parenting

Professors are not well paid.

Do you make more than she does? Haven't you been in the workforce for 15 years?

Why not? Is money that important to you, that you define yourself by how much money you are bringing in? My salary is nothing to be ashamed of, given the state of academia these days, and I have quite a few ways to determine how successful my career has been and continues to be that have little to do with money.

I am not sure what part of living in a nice home, with a brand new vehicle, and three vacations a year strikes you as "pinching pennies," but if you are doing better on virtually the same salary, more power to you. Although my salary is based on a nine month, not a twelve month contract.....

No culture in DFW? They must not be trying very hard, or have very specific, limiting interests.

Really? Where?

I have been in the workforce (fulltime) for 18 years with no bs, or masters or phd and while I don't make much compared to what you think is good money, it was pretty close to what the poster had revealed her salary as before.

No, there was no way to change our standard of living and stay there. We were living in a 1200 square foot condo and having to watch our spending as it was; moving into unsafe housing or driving an unsafe vehicle or dropping health insurance wasn't an option. Besides, my husband and I were living about 1800 miles apart for much of the year, which wasn't a long-term option. As I said, we knew going into the Bay Area job that it was going to be temporary, so we made the most of it while we could, and it proved to be a good gamble.

I've only been to the San Antonio area, it was wonderful...very beautiful and the culture was very rich.

Of course money is important to me as it is most people. I don't define myself by how much money I make but it is a part of me as I wouldn't be getting raises if I wasn't doing my job and having it as a part of defining me.
