How would you respond if you were the teacher?

Recently, in my third grade class, we were having the "What do you want to be when you grow up?" conversation.

That is the reason you need to support thier dreams, b/c they are ALL some of these kids have!

I am Indian, let me tell you what the stats for female first nation women are..drugs/suicide/poverty/disease/teen preganacy and alcohol are the norm. Very few even go on to grade 8 let alone high school. We know this, we watch it, see it on these womens faces. And when one of my sisters children raise thier hand and say they want to fly...I am looking for wings. Its not all about what we CAN do, its also about what we DREAM.

It may seem logical for you to point out the fla in thier young thinking, but it is also cruel. I know poverty, I know the feeling you get in your gut when you havent eaten in 3 days. I know dreaming is what kept me alive through it.

You may work with these kids, but I was one of them. Let them dream for as long as they can. Its not your job to point out the harsh reality to 8 year olds.

I'm so jealous! Is the factory in VA? Is it Crayola (The One True Crayon Maker)? I feel a road trip coming on.

Just for the record, as the teacher who posted about this, it was one of those natural conversations that started in class.
